Sugar Cane ‘Denim Collectibles’ SC49007 1946 Denim Jean Indigo
‘Denim Collectibles’ is a new offering from renowned Japanese Denim experts Sugar Cane & Co. For this limited project Sugar Cane have collaborated with Shigeki Wakita, one of the original collectors of vintage American made denim in Japan and a leading expert in the field. Under his careful watch and guidance, Sugar Cane has developed new fabrics, specific patterns as well as parts to truly capture the essence of original, hard-to-find deadstock vintage Levi’s from Wakita’s personal archive.Â
The SC49007 1946 Jean is a true reproduction of an original pair of Levi’s made in 1946. These feature many details that were present during war-time manufacturing (a period that saw strict US Governmental material control), but as restrictions started to lift there are details present on this 1946 model that show the shift in manufacturing.Â
Small details like the paper flasher on the pocket shows ‘Copyright 1945’ & not ‘For the Duration’ like war-time manufacturing, as well as original branded buttons (not laurel wreath or donut) and exposed copper rivets on the pockets, while the model number does not have the ‘S’ at the start.Â
The denim is similar to war-time fabric and captures the colour hue of oxidised indigo and the characteristics of the warp and weft yarn match that of late-war manufacturing, with a slight grey hue to the weft. The fabric is from the Nihon Menpu mill in Japan and specifically woven for Sugar Cane under Wakita’s guidance & to his liking (he basically wanted Sugar Cane to reproduce his original jeans & jackets as his vintage pairs are rare and too precious to wear!) They even made a new loom to weave this 1946 fabric to create the imperfections & roughness in the fabric, making the output extremely slow and limited.
The waistband features a small chain stitch run off while the stitching throughout is ‘perfectly imperfect’ to re-create that era of production. The threads on the hems have been left unfinished and can be cut to length or left to your liking. The 1946 features a high rise with a straight fit throughout and these come as one wash.Â
